Publication in The Conversation: How Trump’s Agenda Challenges Global Climate Goals

2 minutes Read

We're pleased to share that TWIN SEEDS research has been featured in The Conversation Spain.

In the article "Trump no solo está rompiendo el orden económico: el impacto medioambiental de sus políticas", researchers María Ángeles Tobarra Gómez, Carmen Córcoles Fuentes, Marina Sánchez-Serrano (Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha), and Pilar Osorio Morallón (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos) examine how Donald Trump's return to the White House could impact global environmental governance.

The article details how Trump's deregulatory agenda - marked by the rollback of environmental protections and focused on expanding fossil fuels - represents not only a reversal of U.S. climate commitments, but a broader threat to global climate cooperation. By pausing federal climate funds, dismantling sustainability standards, and withdrawing from international agreements, the U.S. risks undermining the fragile momentum built around global decarbonisation.

Meanwhile, the European Union continues to pursue a more proactive environmental strategy, with tools like the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive that link trade to sustainability objectives.

This article contributes to the broader TWIN SEEDS research agenda, which explores how global shifts (economic, geopolitical, and environmental) are reshaping trade policy and sustainability in Europe.
